Lewes Launches Own Currency
September 10, 2008 by admin
At 7.30 pm on Tuesday 9th September, Lewes in Sussex lauched it's own currency with the aim of keeping trade local.
Inspired by the Devon town of Totnes which launched its own currency last year, Lewes has followed suit by creating their own "pound". A creative yet practical way for local people to make money work for Lewes. They join a growing list of communities around the world attempting to protect regional economies and preserve their distinctive towns and villages.
Money spent locally circulates within, and benefits the local economy. Money spent in national chains doesn't. The Lewes Pound encourages demand for local goods and services. In turn this builds resilience to the rising costs of energy, transport and food. The Lewes Pound is a complementary currency intended to be used alongside pounds Sterling.
You can use it for goods and services wherever you see the Lewes Pound sign.
